Careers Kill – 10 Reasons To Quit Your Job And Become A Hobo

  • 1 – A career is a waste of time. Let’s face it, our lives are short. In one sense, a job secures our futures, but at the same time, they steal so much of our time. On average, here in Canada, we spend 36.6 hours per week working. Multiply that by 52 weeks per year… Times it by about 50 years of working equals 95 160. That’s almost one hundred thousand hours of our lives that we spend working, when we could be out there exploring the world! Not to mention, those who work over-time or have to work extra part-time jobs just to make ends meet. The point is, when we spend on too much of our lives chasing the idea of a secure future, we forget to live for ourselves in the present.
  • 2 – There are no ATM’s in heaven. You could literally spend your entire life chasing riches and material objects, but when you finally check out, you can’t bring a damn thing with you. Hell, you can’t even bring the clothes off of your back. No matter what physical objects you accumulate while you’re alive, they become totally meaningless once our lives come to an end. Therefore, we need to spend more time exploring the world and accumulating memories. Because, in the end there is no luggage check or bank machines in the after-life.
  • 3 –  It will force you to make changes. I was scared to quit my career. I didn’t know what I was going to do once my paychecks stopped coming in. When I’d think about it, it would make me want to stay safe and comfortable in my current situation. Everything about what it would be like was totally unknown. The thing about putting yourself into this financial situation is that it forces you to adapt to your changing world. It helps you realize that you can no longer just talk about the things you would do, you actually need to put your plans into action and make the changes you need to survive.
  • 4 – It opens your eyes. Once you adapt to the changes you’ll have made. You’ll be able to see things from a new perspective. You’ll be able to see that having a steady career isn’t the only thing keeping you alive. You’ll find new ways and I guarantee you’ll learn a few things along the way.
  • 5 – The world is too big not to explore. There’s just too much out there. There are places and adventures for everyone. Whether you decided to travel the world or just start exploring where ever you’re from, not having a career to rely on, gives you the opportunity to get out there and see the world for what it really is.
  • 6 – A career doesn’t define you. Some people think of themselves as police officers or firemen. Some people are judges or lawyers. While others are laborers or tradesmen . When you think of yourself as what you do to make money, you start to forget who you really are. We are all so much more than what we do for a living. We all have passions and hobbies that we would prefer to define ourselves by, rather than our jobs.
  • 7 – Most careers keep you grounded and stunt growth. This reason isn’t valid for everyone. There are some people out there whose job are independent of where they live. There are those who work from home or actually have jobs that they must travel for and those who actually have careers with growth potential But for those who can’t work away from home or have no way of advancing in their fields, they should probably quit and do some travelling or at least try to find a job that allows the potential to grow.
  • 8 – You can always go back. Once you have gained enough experience working in a certain field, you can almost always get another one in the same field. That way, even if you end up back at square one, at least you’ll be able to say that you tried to make a difference.
  • 9 – The world is more accessible than ever. From planes and trains and cars to the world of information and the world-wide web. We can access and learn almost anything at the touch of a button. We don’t even need to leave our computers to be able to immerse ourselves in other worlds and cultures. Sure, travelling and exploring the world isn’t cheap or easy, but the fact that the world is more connected today than it was even 20 years ago, says that it’s time to get out there and see some new stuff.
  • 10 – Careers kill. Most young people come of out school and get jobs in their career field of choice. Usually, they work for awhile and then they all fall into the same traps of buying a car and/or a house, then marriage and children, then debt and R.R.S.P’s and the next thing they know, they’re retiring at the age of 65. Forty years pass by and all we’ve really done is work for someone else. Then we find ourselves wishing we had seen more of the world while we were young.
